Helpful Info > Bowie / Mitchellville
Old Town Bowie was originally known as Huntington City when the Pennsylvania Railroad built a branch line to Washington and the area around the railroad station grew rapidly. In the 1880s, the town was renamed in honor of Maryland Governor Oden Bowie. Even with its rapid growth from a country settlement into a vibrant city, Old Town Bowie values its rich past and has preserved much of its early appeal of charm and character.

The Belair Mansion preserves and interprets much of Bowie's history . As plantations developed along the Patuxent River , tobacco farming developed as the main industry in Prince George 's County. Governor Samuel Ogle built the Belair Mansion in 1737, and as a thoroughbred racehorse enthusiast, he established the famous Bowie Stable.

Today the City of Bowie covers 16 square miles of residential development, shopping and office centers, with myriad educational, recreational, and cultural opportunities. As with many railroad communities, Bowie experienced some economic decline over the years, but the revitalization efforts of Old Town Bowie  are revitalizing the community's economy and energy.

Bowie offers a variety of housing opportunities, from well-maintained traditional homes to modern communities. Townhomes, condos and quality senior residences are also available.

Bowie is easily-accessible via the superior transit systems in the area, located just 12 miles from Washington, D.C., 15 miles from Annapolis, and 20 minutes from Baltimore . A little farther down the road are Richmond, 105 miles away, Philadelphia, 110 miles, and New York City, 200 miles.

Special attractions in and around Bowie include:

  • Bowie Baysox, the AA minor league affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team
  • Seven golf courses within 10 minutes (three semi-private, two private, two public)
  • Over 16 miles of hiker/biker trails
  • Bowie Playhouse Theater
  • Summer outdoor concerts at Allen Pond Park
  • Bowie Railroad Station and Huntington Museum
  • Belair Mansion & Stable Museums
  • Indoor year-round ice rink

Residents of Mitchellville, Maryland, take tremendous pride in their friendly community and beautiful homes. Located in Prince George's County in southern Maryland, this community is just 20 miles east of the nation's capital.

Mitchellville is also just a quick drive from the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States. The Bay's rivers, wetlands, trees and land all provide homes, protection or food for wildlife of all types. The Bay is an excellent place to sail in the spring and fall, and a favorite weekend retreat for residents from the Washington metropolitan area.

Mitchellville real estate consists of upscale single-family homes, townhouses and apartments complexes. The area's development boom took place mostly in the 1970s, but there is a low of new construction at the moment, as well. Land is available for custom real estate development.

The average home sold for $380,000 in January 2006. Most single family properties range in price between $300,000 and $1 million. A rising number of new, luxury colonial homes sell for closer upwards of $2 million. Many condos and town homes are available between $100,000 and $600,000.

Mitchellville is quiet, and has very low crime. It offers its population access to excellent public schools, which boast high test performance and more than 80 percent graduation rate. Most students go on to pursue college degrees, and have easy access to prestigious nearby institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, and the U.S. Naval Academy.

The community offers excellent shopping and dining, a large park, and two golf courses. Nature walks are available in the Fran Uhler Natural Area, located in the forested floodplain of the Patuxent River.

Mitchellville is just next door to the city of Bowie, where residents can enjoy theater, dance and music at the Bower Center for the Performing Arts and at the Bowie Playhouse. The National Ballet Company in Bowie is the oldest in Maryland. There are numerous museums and historical sites here, too.
